This vacuum is almost impossible to turn on and off; you need both hands. Also, hard to remove the container to empty it. It picks up crumbs and stuff off my kitchen floor ok , but you could probably find one for half the price that does better than this. Don't buy it.

I'm actually only posting a review because I'm here to buy another one of these. It does its job fairly well, given that it's a comfortably light (3 lb 1 oz) handheld vac. The suction is adequate to pick up all the usual bits that end up on the floor or carpet throughout a normal day, but if you expect it to be as strong as a full-size vacuum, you're expecting too much from a battery-powered motor.

I bought the CHV1218 over 2 years ago, but the battery is getting geriatric and starts slowing down within about a minute of power-on -- unsurprising for Ni-Cad battery chemistry with (on average) twice-a-day usage for nearly 2.5 years. That's a reasonable lifespan for the battery, and if they let me swap in a new battery and continue using the same appliance, I would. But, modern design calls for bare-minimum engineering, so by the time the battery is dying, many other "hair's-breadth" time-to-failure components are ready to fail as well (bearings, plastic-on-plastic surfaces dependent on friction, plastic hinges that flex).

As others have noted here, B&D really ought to take notice and redesign the power switch. It's VERY hard to switch on/off, and if your thumb is at all wet/greasy, you'll have to clean off your hands first.

Our prior "hand vac" was a Dirt Devil and its battery died in less than 1 year, and its suction was inferior to this model.

I like this unit well enough (except for the power switch) that I'm buying this model again, to replace the prior one (even though it's no longer carried in my local Wal-Mart store, so now I have to order it online).

We've had this DustBuster for about 2 years now. Personally, we've had no problems. It works like a hand vac should. Even my 3 year old has no issue turning it off and on and it charges fine.
